Study at a
Public College
Your best path to
permanent residency
Even though the name is "public college," it doesn't mean that it's free; instead, the institution receives government funding.
Public colleges are larger, offer more course options, provide more student services, and have better infrastructure, such as residences, libraries, laboratories, etc. There's a mix of local and international students. The selection process is rigorous, and the start dates are fixed, occurring only in September, January, and May, and not all courses are available to start on those dates. Some can only begin in the fall (September).
During the study period, the student will receive a study and work permit, and their spouse will also be allowed to work. Children can study for free in a public school. Those who complete a course according to these immigration criteria can apply for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). This allows the student to stay in Canada and work full-time for a period of up to three years after completing the course. The duration of the work permit will depend on the length of the program. The student doesn't need a job offer to apply for it and can only apply for the PGWP once. The spouse and children can stay in the country with the student who receives the PGWP. If you have plans to immigrate, the public college is the recommended option.
The tuition at this type of institution has an average cost of CAD$13,000 to CAD$20,000 per year. You need a higher level of English proficiency than what's required for entry into a private college. Most require an IELTS score of 6 or 6.5, but some may accept 5.5.
